Navigating the legal landscape as a newly qualified professional: free career guide

Back to Blogs

Over the past year the market for newly qualified solicitors has shifted significantly with the majority of firms reporting higher retention rates, meaning fewer NQ roles on the market. Research shows that retention rates average between 80% to 90%, depending on the firm and location. The firms which have maintained high retention rates offer flexible working, very good compensation packages, clear career pathways and invest in extensive training and development opportunities.

Areas such as corporate and banking have been stagnant in 2024, but positive signs are showing that there may be more opportunities in these areas in 2025. When considering what might be available for those qualifying this year, we’re likely to see growth in the transactional market, which includes corporate, banking and finance, and real estate; especially as more corporate teams experience an influx in deals.

Opportunities in employment, construction and pensions law will also increase. There has been a rise in contentious areas such as employment and commercial litigation, and it’s likely this trend will continue. Property and Private Client also remain buoyant.

The journey to qualification can be extremely challenging and after all of that hard work, what happens post qualification? For some the transition may be straight forward if they are clear on their legal specialist area or are happy with a position they managed to secure at the firm they trained at, but this isn’t the case for everyone. Many may be unclear about their area of specialisation or perhaps feel dissatisfied with their current employer. If you’re unsure of your specialism, firm and location it’s important to take the time to think carefully about your interests and career goals. A rash decision made at qualification could shape your future legal career. Changing specialism in the first 12 months of qualification is much easier compared to down the line when your career is more established.
